Screen Free Activities for Travel and Boring Summer Afternoons

Summer is full of on-the-go activities and yet somehow our kids are still bored. Instead of handing them a screen, check out some of our favorite screen-free activities. These are perfect for flights, car rides, camping, and boring summer afternoons at home.

If you don't want to read through this post, you can head straight to the list on my storefront here.

1. Reusable sticker books - These things are so cool. The stickers are a bit like foam but they stick on the pages and can be removed and stuck somewhere else. My 1 year old up to my 8 year old love playing with these and the best part is most of them come in packs of 3-6 so you can get several for your kids to work through. These are the ones we have and my girls love them! (Or check out my storefront for more of our favorite sticker books!) Yes, this activity has a lot of pieces to keep track of, but the kids don't seem to lose these as easily as other activity books so I'm not usually left searching for a hundred lost pieces.

2. National Geographic Kids Activity Books - There's nothing better than your kids eager to learn while also being entertained completely on their own. My elementary aged kids love these books and will sit and read them for hours. They've got regular reading books and also activity books that are a bit more interactive. Our favorites are: Little Kids First Big Book of Dinosaurs, First Big Book of Why, and Volcanoes! Most of the National Geographic "Readers" books (like Volcanoes!) are available on paperback for under $6 so find the one that your kid will love the most.

3. Sticker Books - These aren't reusable, though the stickers can be removed if placed wrong. They're great for kids ages 2.5+ and some of them are on some great deals right now.

  • If you're looking for ones for smaller kids (who don't know numbers and letters yet), check out ones like My Sticker Dress-Up Baby Animals (Or any of the My Sticker Dress-Up books) I love these ones for younger kids (though they're great for any age) because they don't have to match each sticker with a specific page and number, they can just find stickers they like and put them on any page they like.
  • For kids who enjoy sticker books where you make an actual picture, Paint By Sticker Kids is great for younger kids, and Brain Games Sticker By Number books are great for kids who are solidly able to match numbers and letters. I particularly love this one because it has 40+ pictures to do and it's on sale for $10 right now!

3. Kanoodle - My daughter got this for Christmas and all 3 of my kids love playing with it. It's great for car rides, boring afternoons, or even sitting in the waiting room at the doctors office. It's compact, about the size of a 3x5 card (only an inch tall) so it travels well and my daughter carries it around in her cross body bag so I'm not even the one who's responsible for it. Other great travel games like this are the Memory Game and the Rope Untangler Game.

4. Drawing/Coloring - Yes, there are ways that this can be travel friendly. Low mess, low risk of dropping 64 crayons in the car, and no risk of having your toddler draw all over their car seat.

  • For all ages - Writing tablets are amazing because the 'pen' is attached to the tablet so they can't lose it, and the drawing only happens on the tablet no matter how much they try to draw on something else. All my kids love these things, so they're great for any age.
  • For toddlers - Color Wonder Mess-Free Coloring Pages - I love this because it colors the picture the right color but on every other surface it won't color at all. These truly are a wonder and my go to coloring toy for toddlers in car seats who are unsupervised with markers in hand. This particular one is great because they're blank pages so your older kids can enjoy them as well, coloring whatever they want and loving the surprise when different colors show up on the page. These Mess Free Bluey Coloring Pages are my girls favorites, but if your kids aren't into Bluey, the link will give you tons of different options for coloring pages as well.
  • For PreK/K - These magnetic drawing boards have been a huge hit for my preschooler, she loves to get this toy out whenever we've got some time with nothing to do. These color clings are really fun for car rides because they can color them and stick them on their window all on their own, plus they get to admire them throughout the car ride so it's like a built-in display system. These Water Wow books are super fun for this age as well and all you need is a tiny bit of water.
  • For Elementary kids - Mad Libs are a hit with my 3rd grader right now. She and her friends go crazy when they get one of these booklets out. My kiddo also just loves having a sketch pad and some colored pencils (or these twistables for younger kids) so she can let her creativity take her wherever.
  • Tweens/Teens - This coloring sketchbook set (sponsored) comes with acrylic markers and tons of coloring pages made for teens.

These are our go-to travel activities but if you didn't find anything that you think will work, check out the other items on my storefront. I add to this whenever I find something great for travel so check back whenever you need some new ideas.
