Romantic comedies have long been a beloved genre, offering readers laughter, love, and lighthearted escapism. For those who prefer their romance sweet, wholesome, and free of explicit content, clean rom-com books are a fantastic choice. These novels focus on charming characters, witty banter, and heartwarming relationships, making them perfect for readers of all ages and tastes.

What Makes a Rom-Com Book “Clean”?

Clean romantic comedy books avoid explicit scenes, strong language, and mature themes. Instead, they emphasize emotional connection, humor, and the development of meaningful relationships. The focus is on wholesome fun and positive messages about love, friendship, and personal growth.

My Favorite Clean Rom-Com Books (that are actually funny)

1. "More Than Fine" by Stephanie Stoker

I wouldn't be a good author if I didn't love (and promote) my own books, and while I may be slightly biased, I think this book is absolutely hilarious. Every time I read it I bust up laughing, yet always end up with a heartwarming feeling by the end. It's the perfect combination and everything that's right about the world.

2. The Sweet Rom"Com" Series by Kortney Keisel

This is a series of 3 novels and one novella that are all equally funny, sweet, romantic, and enjoyable. There are almost no slow parts which is so hard to find in a book and you'll find yourself staying up all night just to finish because you literally never want to put these down. I started with "Commit", which is the novella, and after laughing more than I had ever laughed while reading a book, I knew I needed to read the other ones as well.

3. "Not How I Saw That Going" by Jenessa Fayeth

If you've read any of Jenessa Fayeth's books then you know she's got a talent for hilariously awkward situations, and this book is one of my top picks. The title alone makes you want to laugh, and trust me, the inside is filled with equally funny moments. One thing I love about this book in particular is that while it's funny, it also has serious moments and the characters have real struggles. The MMC (That's "Male Main Character") has trauma from his past that comes out in the end and it's so tender to see how the FMC ("Female Main Character") helps him realize it's okay to have weakness and problems.

4. "Hating the Cinnamon Roll CEO" by Camilla Evergreen

This book is not for everyone. It's got a bit of a dark sense of humor, which can be off-putting if that's not your thing. However, I loved this atypical romance between a woman who hates to be touched and generally wishes she could be a recluse and her happy-go-lucky billionaire boss (who she most definitely doesn't like). It's different than your typical romance but still has the key points that makes it enjoyable. If you love characters with a cynical view of the world and very sarcastic sense of humor, this is one you should try.

A quick note: I've read a few of Camilla Evergreen's other books and can say she writes rom-coms that aren't all rainbows and sunshine (but still have the happily-ever-after), but if you're not jiving with it, don't keep reading. She's niche in the dark humor romance category and some of her books (ie. mafia romance) were too dark for me to enjoy. So read with caution and understand that if you don't like her books you don't need to leave a bad review. We all have different taste in books.

5. "So That Happened" by Katie Bailey

I love Katie Bailey's older books (her newer ones are getting a little too swear-y for my taste) and this one in particular is so funny. The very first scene is beyond funny, and as the book continues it just keeps getting better.

"So That Happened" follows Annie as she flees her ex and her job (where her ex works) to make a new start in Georgia. However, after barely making her flight (and thoroughly annoying the man next to her) the flight ends up getting delayed until the next day and everyone is put up in a hotel that night. Due to a meddling older woman on the flight, Annie and the grumpy man she'd sat next to on the plane accidently get stuck sharing a room and by the time they figure it out, there are no rooms left in the hotel. After waking up cuddled in each other's arms, they feel thoroughly uncomfortable around each other and can't get away fast enough.

Only come to find out, Annie's new job is working for none other than Mr. Grumpy-pants himself.

6. "So Not My Thing" by Melanie Jacobson

This book is the book that made me love clean rom-coms and one of the few books I've actually re-read. Here's a quick synopsis.

As a teenager Elle Jones, became a viral internet meme (and not in a good way) after fan-girling hard on live TV for teenage popstar artist, Miles Crowe. His rejection and the meme it became ruined her high school experience, and nearly ruined her life. Now, almost a decade later, she's made a name for herself in the commercial real estate business, and the only people who know she's the girl from the viral internet meme are her annoying younger brother and her best friend.

However, when Miles Crowe chooses her home city as the perfect city for his new jazz club, and she's chosen to be his agent, she's worried being seen with him will make people realize that she's that embarrassing girl from the photos and her whole life will fall apart once more. She's determined to be the worst agent possible and get fired ASAP, before he finds out how their pasts are connected, but he's not the teenage popstar he used to be, and his patience and kindness make it hard for Elle to succeed in getting fired. They also make it hard for her to resist his charm.
